Terrain is Jonathan Wolfe’s debut EP under the moniker Operation Midnight. The Melbourne-based electronica producer has experimented with electronic music for many years, incorporating it into other projects. In 2020, Wolfe spent his creative time writing and recording tracks as a way to escape the doldrums of a long pandemic lockdown in Melbourne. Over the following two years the project gradually evolved into improvised synth patterns, electro-house beats, analog arpeggios and classic wave-synth leads.

What has subsequently followed is Terrain; an EP full of retro ambient chillwave, driving chiptune and dreamy nostalgic synths, committed to tape in early 2022 after Wolfe purchased a Moog Subharmonicon and began feverishly sketching out spontaneous polyrhythms and grainy synth sounds. The result is a hybrid of retro inspired electronic music with emotional resonance – a colourfully saturated and welcoming analogue oddity that has since been described as a “retro-future daydream”.
